The time to act is now

Closing our eyes and carrying on as we always have is not an option.

Between the climate crisis, the Russian war of aggression and ever-increasing prices it is hard not to lose track of today’s current challenges and still remain calm. To clearly summarise these challenges, in 2015 the United Nations used the Millennium Development Goals as the basis to develop the SDGs, the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 17 goals include, for example, “No poverty”, “Gender equality”, and “Climate action”. In other words, the goals include social, economic and environmental topics. 193 UN member states, including Germany, have pledged to achieve these goals by 2030.

What is possible within five years?

The interim report published by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development shows that, based on current actions, Germany will not achieve the goals in this time. However, not one of the countries that individually pledged themselves to this goal through their signature will currently be able to do so.

We should therefore view this interim report as a wake-up call to be able to achieve positive developments by 2030 – not just because of a signature, but above all for ourselves. The formulation of the goals will help us to visualise necessary changes, but action is the deciding factor.

And the time is now.
